Importance of Unfamiliar Events and Experiences as An Adult
Your comfort zone is comfortable. There is nothing wrong with that. But if you spend too much time doing the same things, going to the same places, and following the same routine, life can start to feel a little too predictable.
Think about it. You wake up, go to work, come home, watch the same shows, scroll through your phone, and do it all again the next day. Before you know it, weeks and months have passed.
Trying new things can break that routine.
It doesn’t mean you have to completely change your life or start doing things that scare you every single day. It could be something as simple as trying a new restaurant, learning a new skill, visiting a new place, meeting new people, or taking yourself somewhere you’ve never been.
There are actually plenty of reasons why trying new things can be good for you.
What Happens When You Try Something New?
1. You stop running on autopilot
A lot of our daily routines happen without much thought. You know your usual route, your morning routine, your favorite coffee order, and what you’re going to do after work.
When you try something new, you have to pay attention.
You have to figure things out, make decisions, and actually be present in what you’re doing. Sometimes that’s exactly what you need when life starts feeling like one long routine.
2. New experiences can make you feel excited again
Trying something new can give you that little rush of excitement you don’t get from doing the same thing every day.
Maybe you’ve wanted to try a dance class but kept putting it off. Maybe you want to travel somewhere new or finally try that hobby you’ve been thinking about.
You might feel nervous at first, but that excitement is part of the fun.
3. You learn new things
Every new experience teaches you something.
You might learn a new skill, discover something you enjoy, or simply learn more about how you handle unfamiliar situations.
Even when something doesn’t go well, you usually walk away knowing something you didn’t know before.
4. You keep your mind active
When you’re doing something you’ve never done before, your brain has to work a little harder.
You have to learn, remember things, make decisions, and figure out what to do next. This is one reason learning new skills and having new experiences can be good for keeping your mind active as you get older.
5. You become better at solving problems
New situations don’t always go according to plan.
Maybe you get lost somewhere, struggle to learn a new skill, or find yourself dealing with a situation you didn’t expect.
Instead of relying on what you already know, you have to find another solution. The more you do this, the more comfortable you can become with figuring things out as you go.
6. You become more comfortable with change
Change is part of life whether we like it or not.
Jobs change. Relationships change. People move. Plans fall apart. Sometimes life takes you somewhere you never expected to go.
Trying new things when you don’t have to can help you become more comfortable with situations that are outside your control.
7. You create better memories
Think about some of your favorite memories.
There is a good chance many of them involve something different from your usual routine. Maybe it was a trip, a random night out, meeting someone new, or doing something you had never tried before.
Routine days can start blending together, while unusual experiences tend to stand out.
8. Life can feel less repetitive
One of the strange things about getting older is how quickly time seems to pass.
Weeks can start feeling the same when you’re doing the same things every day. Adding new experiences gives you something different to look forward to and helps break up that routine.
Even small changes can make a normal week feel a little more interesting.
How New Experiences Can Help You Emotionally
9. You become more confident
Doing something unfamiliar and realizing that you can handle it feels good.
Maybe you were nervous about going somewhere alone, speaking in front of people, applying for a new job, or learning something difficult.
Once you do it, you have proof that you can handle more than you thought.
10. You become less afraid of the unknown
The more unfamiliar situations you experience, the less scary they can become.
You start realizing that feeling nervous doesn’t always mean something bad is about to happen. Sometimes it simply means you’re doing something you’re not used to.
11. You can break out of a rut
Sometimes you don’t even realize how stuck you’ve become until you change something.
Trying a new activity, visiting somewhere different, or meeting new people can give you something to look forward to and break up a routine that has started feeling dull.
New experiences won’t solve serious mental health problems, but they can give you a change of environment and something different to focus on.
12. You discover new emotions
Trying new things can make you feel excited, nervous, proud, curious, uncomfortable, surprised, or even scared.
That’s part of being human.
When you keep doing the same things, you can end up feeling like you’re going through the same emotions over and over again. New experiences can add a little more variety to your life.
13. You get a different perspective
Sometimes you need to step away from your usual environment to see things differently.
Traveling, meeting people from different backgrounds, learning something new, or simply spending time somewhere unfamiliar can make you look at your own life from a different angle.
You might even come back realizing that something you thought was a huge problem isn’t as big as you thought.
New Experiences Can Change How You See Yourself
14. You learn more about who you are
You might think you know yourself pretty well, but new situations can surprise you.
You could discover that you actually enjoy being around new people. Maybe you’re more adventurous than you thought. Maybe you enjoy teaching yourself new skills. Or maybe you realize there are certain things you never want to do again.
You learn more about yourself by actually living than by simply thinking about who you are.
15. You challenge the things you believe about yourself
Maybe you’ve always told yourself that you’re shy, bad at sports, terrible with money, not creative, or too scared to travel alone.
Sometimes you just need to try something before deciding what you’re capable of.
You might surprise yourself.
16. You realize there are more options
When you only know one way of doing things, it can be difficult to imagine anything else.
New places, people, jobs, hobbies, and experiences can show you that there are actually many different ways to live your life.
You don’t have to follow the same path you’ve always been on just because it’s familiar.
17. You grow as a person
Growth usually requires some level of discomfort.
You have to try things, make mistakes, learn from them, and keep going. You won’t grow much if you never give yourself a chance to experience anything different.
You don’t have to constantly push yourself to the limit either. Sometimes growth can be as simple as trying something you’ve been putting off for months.
New Experiences Can Improve Your Social Life
18. You have more to talk about
Trying new things gives you stories and experiences to share.
You might discover a new restaurant, take a class, visit a new place, or pick up an interesting hobby. These experiences can also make conversations more interesting because you’re constantly learning and experiencing new things.
19. You meet different people
If you always go to the same places and spend time with the same people, your social circle can stay pretty small.
Trying new activities and visiting new places gives you more chances to meet people you wouldn’t normally come across.
You could meet a new friend, a mentor, a business partner, or even someone you eventually fall in love with.
You never know who you’ll meet when you step outside your usual routine.
20. You create new memories with people you already love
You don’t always have to try something new alone.
Take your friends or family with you. Try a new restaurant together. Take a trip. Learn something together. Go somewhere you’ve never been.
Doing something different together can give you something to remember and talk about later.
21. You start creating a life that feels like yours
This might be the biggest reason to try new things.
When you only follow the same routine because it’s what you’ve always done, you can end up living a life based mostly on habit.
Trying different things gives you the chance to figure out what you actually like.
Maybe you discover that you love traveling. Maybe you find a hobby that becomes a big part of your life. Maybe you realize you want a completely different career.
You don’t have to know exactly what you want right now. Sometimes you figure it out by trying things and seeing what happens.
So, What Can You Try?
You don’t have to book a flight tomorrow or make some huge change to your life.
Start small.
Take a different route somewhere, try a restaurant you’ve never been to, learn how to make something you’ve never cooked before, start a new hobby, go to an event by yourself, talk to someone new, take a class, or visit a place in your own city that you’ve never been to.
You can even start with something you’ve been saying you’ll do “one day.”
The point is to give yourself opportunities to experience something different. You might love it, you might hate it, or you might discover something about yourself that you didn’t expect.
Your life doesn’t have to look the same every year; give yourself permission to explore, change your mind, try again, and discover new parts of yourself along the way.
